BMW is an exclusive brand that caters to those who want a luxury car with performance chops. Cost of entry to the club starts around $33,000 and from there the sky’s the limit. The 2017 BMW M760i is that beautiful, blue sky parked in your driveway.

On second thought, it’s probably that beautiful blue sky parked in your climate-controlled garage by your chauffer. Base price on this car is $153,800 and our tester with options came in at $179,595. This is not your entry-level BMW. It is your high-end, luxury BMW with all the beauty, elegance, and performance that entails.

It’s a large sedan that isn’t a standout in a crowd. If you want to attract attention, then this car isn’t going to do the trick, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good-looking car. It is long and wide and in the Frozen Dark Brown Metallic paint on our tester – a $5,200 option – it doesn’t look like very other car in the parking lot. It’s not brash and in your face with its lofty price tag. There’s something subdued and understated about the M760i. The person driving or being driven in this car has nothing to prove.

Inside, that theme continues with oodles of luxury amenities, but with a very modern design aesthetic that keeps things from getting flashy. Seats are leather with quilted diamond stitching and they’re 20-way adjustable up front. Rear passengers, well, those guys might get the better deal in the BMW M760i especially when equipped with the Luxury Rear Seating Package ($1,800) and Rear Executive Lounge Seating ($5,750).

The first package includes multi-adjustable comfort seats, massage, and ventilation. There’s a 7-inch Touch Command Tablet in the center armrest that controls the climate, ambiance lighting, audio, and seating controls. It also adds a heated steering wheel for the driver doing all the work and three-level heated seats and heated armrests for everyone. The second package adds a power rear seat footrest, an enhanced rear center console with a foldable table, and rear seat entertainment system.

As luxurious and coddling as the rear seats are, there’s still good reason to choose to be the one in the driver’s seat. Power for the BMW M760i comes from a 6.6-liter BMW M Performance Twin Power Turbo V-12 with 601 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. It gives you a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. This is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. There’s also an M sport exhaust system that enhances performance and delivers a rich exhaust note perfectly suited to this elegant and powerful car.

Driving Dynamics Control provides a choice of Eco Pro, Adaptive, Comfort, Comfort+, Sport, or Sport+ modes depending on the drive experience you prefer. The more aggressive settings in Sport and Sport+ provide a performance drive while shifting things down to Comfort or Eco Pro modes provides a more easygoing and relaxed drive. No matter the mode, at all times the M760i is composed, comfortable, and powerful. There is no hesitation when you press on the gas and you will find the speed limit is reached in a shockingly small span of time as you merge on to the highway.

Despite this being a large sedan and not a small sports car, handling is never cumbersome. It’s surprisingly light with a superior suspension system that keeps the ride smooth and controlled even on rough surfaces. Take a tight turn at speed and the M760i stays flat with minimal roll and little disturbance to passengers.

Technology is also top-notch with a 10.2-inch touchscreen display, touchpad controller, and gesture control. A Harman Kardon surround sound system is standard with 1,400 watts and 16 speakers or you can upgrade to a Bowers & Wilkins audio system for an even richer experience. There’s also HD radio, Apple Car Play, and a full-color head-up display to help keep your attention focused on the road.

Although not crash-tested by the IIHS or NHTSA since they focus on more high-volume models, there are plenty of standard and available safety features. Multiple airbags, rear view camera, park distance control front and rear, daytime running lights, and attention assist are standard. The Driver Assistance package ($1,700) adds active driving assistant plus, active cruise control with stop and go, active lane assist with side collision avoidance, and traffic jam assistant.

The 2017 BMW M760i is an elegant luxury sedan. It offers all the expected amenities to keep passengers comfortable whether they choose to drive or lounge in the rear seats combined with modern safety and technology. Its powerful V-12 engine provides plenty of performance to make this elegant car anything but subdued when you’re behind the wheel.
