Ferrari doesn’t need a sedan. Alfa Romeo has done it for them.
Alfa Romeo has done it. The Italian automaker has beaten its German and American rivals in building the best driving, handling, and sounding high-performance sport sedan in its class. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, or QV, is powered by a Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, with all of that power going to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic. No, a six-speed manual isn’t on offer in the US; the take rate simply wouldn’t have been high enough for Alfa to justify.
However, the slushbox is more than good enough because there’s so much more to love about this Italian stud. That Ferrari-derived engine, for example, is related to the California T’s twin-turbo V8, but it has two less cylinders. Painted Rosso Competizione Tri-coat for an extra $2,200, the Giulia QV more than looks the part of an Italian exotic. Well, that’s because it is.
It looks more special than its main rivals, consisting of the BMW M3, Mercedes-AMG C63 and Cadillac ATS-V. Its quad exhaust gurgles and growls at exactly the right moments. The Brembo high-performance disc brakes will ensure you come to quick and complete stop because you’ll for be forced, at some point, to come to an abrupt halt in between 0-60 mph sprint runs. In short, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is the four-door Ferrari that Ferrari will never build. It doesn’t have to. Alfa Romeo has done it for them.
